It’s an editor’s holy grail— to come up with a story about a revolutionary health strategy that wards off cancer and diabetes, eases pain, and even adds years to your life. Something with no side effects, and please, while you’re at it, make it inexpensive and easy to find. To my delight, we’re covering just such an amazing breakthrough in this issue—and guess what? It’s something utterly familiar. Right now, vitamin D is in the crosshairs of researchers around the world, and a boatload of experts are recommending that we dramatically increase the amount we get every day. Since many of us don’t get enough regular sun exposure these days, and since food sources of vitamin D are limited, taking supplements is the simple solution for most people. “The jury is in,” says one leading scientist we interviewed for our story Make today D-day.
Another story I dream about running would reveal the magic formula for helping readers grapple with the challenge of losing weight. Unlike taking vitamin D, I’m afraid, there’s nothing easy about dropping even a few pounds. But imagine having to lose 300 or more, as one woman did in Got a Lot to Lose?, this issue’s other lifesaving story.
Our amazing weight-loss star, Cathi Lee, managed to lose 340 pounds—without surgery! Now at her goal weight of 170, she tells us that it took a full year to research and develop her plan and then two more years to slowly, steadily lose the pounds.
Yes, losing hundreds of pounds is tough, but it’s not impossible. I know it may seem inconceivable as you read this that you, too, could become a successful loser (unless maybe you had the kind of support you’d get on a show like The Biggest Loser).
