Starting at age 50, you need regular colon cancer screenings to catch this killer in its earliest, most treatable stages. Yet just half of all Americans age 50 and older have had colonoscopies—in which doctors inspect the rectum and colon with a thin, flexible tube equipped with lights and a miniature video camera—the federal government reports. Perhaps that’s because the procedure sounds uncomfortable, though experts say it’s not. If you’re squeamish, don’t ignore colon health; just pick another type of test. Ask your doctor about a noninvasive fecal occult blood test, a colon cancer screening that should be repeated each year. It’s not as effective at detecting cancer, but it’s better than nothing.
