Black raspberries fight esophageal cancer. An estimated 14,000 peo-ple die of esophageal cancer in the United States each year. Many of them started out with gastroesophageal reflux disease—serious heartburn and acid backwash that lead to a precancerous condition called Barrett’s esophagus. When volunteers with this condition ate about 1/4 cup of freeze-dried black raspberries a day for 26 weeks, they had fewer signs of cell changes that lead to esophageal cancer, report Ohio State University researchers.

Raw broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage cut bladder cancer risk. Aim for at least three servings of raw cruciferous veggies per month, suggest Roswell Park researchers. Nonsmokers who crunched this way were 73 percent less likely to develop bladder cancer than smokers who skipped these salad bar add-ons. Cooking deactivates up to 90 percent of the cancer-fighting compounds in the pungent vegetables.
