When 207 men ages 60 to 80 took either a low-dose testosterone supplement or a placebo for six months, Dutch researchers found no improvement in strength, mobility, bone density, or thinking skills. All the men started the study with slightly low testosterone levels—an age-related change associated with physical and mental decline. But hormone pills didn’t seem to make a difference. Also, testosterone therapy isn’t without dangerous potential side effects: Even in those with low levels of the hormone, it can stimulate prostate growth.
