“There’s nothing like taking a walk through the alleys of uptown Minneapolis to enjoy the new lilac blossoms hanging over fences and crowding into driveways. Whether they’re beautifully manicured or growing wild, these clusters of tiny blooms make me grateful for the arrival of spring. I love taking a walk through the Wedge neighborhood or down Humboldt Avenue, letting my senses be overwhelmed by the delicate scent of lilac. This unique fragrance can never truly be captured in a bottle.”

“A sign of spring for my wife and grandchildren is our annual trip to the Spring Flower Show at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in Como Park. The entire city of St. Paul seems to come alive in the spring, but this flower show is my favorite destination. The colors, aromas, and educational opportunities cannot be found anywhere else.”
Bob Bierscheid
Director of Parks and Recreation, City of St. Paul

“The Dayton Wildflower Garden in the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a beautiful place to see Minnesota’s spring wildflowers, which are usually at their peak the last week of April and the first week of May. There are hundreds of native plants that bloom or unfurl in the spring, including our state flower, the lady’s slipper, along with many trillium, ferns, and the rare dwarf trout lily.”
Mary Meyer
Interim Director, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

“My favorite spring wildflowers bloom right outside my front door. I’m lucky enough to live along the St. Croix River, and I watch the forest ground come alive on my daily walks. From the speckled leaves of the trout lilies to the bloodroot and hepatica to the Dutchman’s-breeches that blanket the ground, it goes on and on and tells me what type of spring we’re having. Each day changes. No spring is the same.”
Ann Bancroft

“I have two favorite places to enjoy spring flowers. The first is my own neighborhood, St. Paul’s Macalester-Groveland, where most houses have amazing gardens with lots of tulips, crocuses, and the like. My yard just swarms with violets, and my wife and I always wait a few extra weeks before the first mowing of the season so we can enjoy them longer. I also love Como Park, both for the seasonal flowers in the Conservatory and also for the native plants growing around the lake and throughout the park. It’s just about my favorite place in the Twin Cities.”
